The Senufo people of the Ivory coast have a rich tradition of carving and hold thier artists to hightened degree of reverence. These masks are said help the wearer communicate between the living and the dead. Generally including features both animal and human, these masks have a ceremonial purpose to the tribes Poro society, an organization of men tasked with guiding young men through puberty and preparing them for future responsibilities.
This mask features a carved bird known as a Sejen.
